“The inspiration was Wong Kar-wai’s movie In the Mood for Love,” said makeup artist Tamah Krinsky about Alexa Chung‘s look for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala celebrating the opening of China: Through the Looking Glass that took place in New York on Monday, May 4. Krinsky and Chung used the lush visuals in Kar-wai’s 2000 movie about a couple who meet in Hong Kong in 1962, to devise a new version of Chung’s trademark cat eye using NARS Cosmetics. “We decided to go in the vein of 1960s China and play up the ethnicity of Alexa’s features as she is part Chinese,” Krinsky said. Paired with a floral dress designed by Erdem Moralioğlu, the makeup look was understated and elegant, beautifully channeling Kar-wai and a bygone era.
