The 14th annual Spring Gala, held May 20 at the de Young Museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, treated 250 guests to the colorful new exhibit, “The Summer of Love Experience: Art, Fashion, and Rock & Roll.”

The show, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the original Haight-Ashbury Summer of Love, includes looks from designers of the era, including leatherwork, hand-painting, knitting and crochet.

“Bohemian and hippie-influenced styles are on all the designers’ mood boards again this year,” said Alexis Traina. “San Francisco was the epicenter of the free-spirited sixties influence on fashion. All the elaborate patchwork jeans, folkloric patterns, fringe and embroideries are sexy and fun to wear.”

The gala, founded by Vanessa Getty, Trevor Traina, Allison Speer and Kathryn Lasater, raises funds for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Guests enjoying the evening’s festivities and cultural artifacts included Marissa Mayer and Zach Bogue, Denise Hale, Plum Sykes, Alex and Serena Perkins, as well as Ken Fulk, Todd and Katie Traina, Devon Aoki, and museum director Max Hollein and his wife, Nina.

For model Devon Aoki the exhibit transported her to her childhood. “My mother was a hippie, an authentic member of the original peace-and-love Woodstock tribe,” said Aoki. “I grew up with the original fashions of the counter-culture, the elaborate embellishments, the gypsy skirts, the rock star costumes.”

Denise Hale, just back from London, admired the décor, which included green silk tablecloths and pink Limoges platters borrowed from Dede Wilsey. “These peonies by Flowers Claire Marie are so vivid, so beautiful,” said Hale. “I love seeing all of my chic young women friends tonight, all so elegant. It’s a very happy occasion.”

Ann-Sophie Deneve admired the show’s focus on the idealism of the original 1967 Summer of Love, which placed Golden Gate Park at the center of the free-loving, music-filled playground. “Their philosophy of freedom of expression, peace and love has permeated the culture,” she said. “Yes, it is style and fashion and it’s in everything we do.”
