San Francisco Opera Honors David Gockley
In honor of General Director David Gockley’s illustrious, 40-plus year career, the San Francisco Opera celebrated his final season before retirement with a star-studded gala dinner and concert, aptly named Celebrating David!, at the historic War Memorial Opera House on Thursday, June 16. The black tie-affair, co-chaired by John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn, drew over 400 guests including Stephanie and Jim Marver, Karen Kubin, Renee Fleming, and honorary chairs Dede Wilsey and Lynn Wyatt (Vice Chairman of the Houston Grand Opera). The evening commenced with a cocktail party at nearby Diane B. Wilsey Center for Opera, followed by a concert, dinner and speeches at the War Memorial Opera House. Guests heard from Gockley’s fellow colleagues and artists, including co-hosts for the evening, mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade and baritone Thomas Hampson and musicians and composers took the stage to perform pieces reflective of Gockley’s monumental career, such as numbers from operas Nixon in China and Susannah. But David Gockley wasn’t the only one receiving praise. Soprano Renée Fleming took home the San Francisco Opera Medal in recognition of her achievements and silver anniversary with the S.F. Opera.
