The San Francisco Opera fêted both the angelic and devious elements of Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele at its opening night gala starring Ildar Abdrazakov, Patricia Racette and Ramón Vargas at War Memorial Opera House on Friday, September 6. Event designer Colin Cowie conjured up a Dionysian emerald garden inside City Hall for a host of guests including Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Jason Lewis, Trevor and Alexis Traina, Dede Wilsey, Maria Manetti Shrem, OJ Shansby, Karen Caldwell, Ann Girard, Mai Shiver, Karen Kubin, and Juliet de Baubigny. Marissa Mayer arrived wearing a Jason Wu gown, Deepa Pakianathan added an exquisite Alexander McQueen headpiece to her Andrew Gn dress and Joy Venturini Bianchi donned a Ralph Rucci design for the evening. The more outré looks seemed fitting for the event; after all, the quest for knowledge of good and evil inspired Eve’s first foray into fashion.
