S.F. Ballet Auxiliary Fashion Show 2014
“I always wanted a hot pink bedroom!” said Neiman Marcus Fashion Director Ken Downing as he kicked off the 33rd San Francisco Ballet Auxiliary Fashion Show on Thursday, April 3 at the Fairmont in San Francisco. The venerable department store supplied the looks for the annual runway show and luncheon featuring looks from spring collections that benefited the Ballet. A front row fixture at fashion shows each season, Downing personally curated the 53-look presentation. “I wanted to share with everyone the personal journey I take through the fashion capitals of the world,” he said. Runway looks were punctuated by shades of pink, ranging from barely-there blushes to shocking neons. Additional spring trends featured included tribal patterns and seasonal florals translated into graphic prints that were mixed in size and scale. Downing said his personal favorites were the timeless black and white looks that reminded him of Mary Tyler Moore. “My mother was a huge influence on me,” said Downing “And she believed there was never a reason not to have a ‘Mary’ moment.”
A one-time resident of the Bay Area, Downing noted San Francisco stylites have a longtime love of fashion. “I remember Denise Hale, Danielle Steel, Dede Wilsey, all the gals of the city with their exquisite taste and style. Women here love to get dressed up!” he said. Fashion show chair Beatrice Wood continued to carry the city’s stylish banner, wearing a look from Valentino’s spring ’14 ready-to-wear collection to welcome guests who left the luncheon toting the pink tabletop bouquets of hydrangeas that decorated the ballroom.
