The art and fashion glitterati were out in full force for the U.S. debut of Milanese artist Paolo Troilo in San Francisco’s design district. Known for his charged portraits painted with his fingertips—a technique the artist developed when he arrived home from the supply store without brushes—the atmosphere at Darin Geise’s showroom Coup d’Etat was as powerful as the paintings. “The revolution of San Francisco is every day,” declared the exuberant Troilo between photo ops and autograph signings. His works (all photo-real, with elements of action painting) are known for motion: figures grabbing, pumping a fist, or gesturing wildly sold like hotcakes. While the bubbly flowed, interior designer Catherine Kwong, Gap’s Stephen Brady, Restoration Hardware’s Gary Friedman, and Banana Republic president Jack Calhoun were among the tastemakers who spent the evening mixing and mingling.
