Napa Valley wine pioneer Peter Mondavi celebrated his 99th birthday at the Charles Krug Winery with the opening of its new visitor center on Saturday, November 23, in St. Helena. Three generations of Mondavi family members joined neighbors and connoisseurs at the dinner held inside the new space designed by Howard Backen of Backen, Gillam & Kroeger Architects. The winery now includes a modern tasting bar and private tables alongside Cucina di Rosa Trattoria (slated to open this spring) but Backen preserved elements from the original 1972 Redwood Cellar including steel beams, wooden posts, and repurposed redwood panels. Guests toasting Mondavi also honored Culinary Institute of America Chef Larry Forgione and the Krug winery’s 3-acre produce farm that is used in the cooking school’s farm-to-table program.
