Marking the first in a string of grand opening celebrations leading up to the debut of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis, more than 150 Bay Area patrons descended upon the university’s new building to attend a Legacy Dinner on Saturday, October 29. Honoring their lifelong passion for the arts, San Francisco philanthropists and leading social figures Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem were inspired to give $10 million to bring this museum to life because of their friendship with Margrit Mondavi, who supplied the initial seed money towards the endeavor. Fittingly, the new address is located across the street from the Mondavi Performing Arts Center on campus. The night welcomed attendees like Dick and Pam Kramlich, Karen Walker, Susan Swartz, artist and exhibitors Wayne Theiebaud and Willam T. Wiley and the museum’s founding director, Rachel Teagle, who convened for a lavish dinner under The Grand Canopy—designed by associated architects Karl Backus and Florian Idenburg. Although the museum was under construction for only two years, it was in fact 60 years in the making, and will surely nurture the creative community for years to come when it finally opens its doors on November 13.
