Jaden Smith Receives the Inaugural Robert Redford Award
The Redford Center—a Bay Area nonprofit founded by Robert Redford and his son James in 2005—honored Jaden Smith with the organization’s inaugural Robert Redford Award for the rapper-actor’s environmental activism. The newly established honor recognizes Smith’s commitment to green causes, which began a decade ago when he was just 10 years old. Robert, who was recently nominated for a Golden Globe, was stage-side as his son James presented Smith with the award at San Francisco’s August Hall. The benefit event raised over $270,000 to be used in the creation of change-making environmental film content. Following the ceremony, musician Sean Hayes performed for guests including author and activist Amy Tan; film critic Chaz Ebert; Bob and Randi Fisher; Susan Pritzker; Laurie Ubben; celebrated oceanographer Walter Munk; Table + Teaspoon founder Liz Curtis; and Debbie Levin, president and CEO of the Environmental Media Association.
