At the Asian Art Museum’s annual Art + Fashion gala on Thursday, March 7, 450 guests gathered to experience the new “Kimono Refashioned” exhibition and to raise money for a new Kulapat Yantrasat-designed addition to the San Francisco museum.

Attendees of the Bulgari-sponsored affair included the Asian Art Museum board chairperson Akiko Yamazaki (wearing Andrew Gn and Bulgari); San Francisco Ballet principal dancer Yuan Yuan Tan; and Silicon Valley notables, including Anjali Pichai, and Vijay and Ram Shriram.

Many guests took time after dinner to walk through the exhibit, wherein the traditional, elegant Japanese garment in all its creative variations is honored with 35 fresh, inspired styles from the Kyoto Costume Institute, showcasing works by the likes of Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake, John Galliano, Tom Ford for Gucci and Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

The evening also included a performance by Taeko Fukao, a jazz singer from Siga Prefecture, Japan, and a display of exclusive dresses inspired by the Asian Art Museum’s collection — high fashions from the Victorian era to the digital age. One ensemble receiving a great deal of attention was an embellished gown by Andrew Gn, a favorite designer of many of the museum’s patrons.

“Kimono Refashioned’ is on view at the Asian Art Museum through May 5.
