Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz
One of the most profound—and original—multi-faceted art exhibitions, @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz opened on Friday, September 26, in San Francisco, with a preview party honoring patrons, benefactors, donors, art collectors, and all of the national and California agencies involved in the show. Guests including Randi and Bob Fisher, Sako and Bill Fisher, Rose Fisher, Norah and Norman Stone, Douglas Durkin, Nion McEvoy and Leslie Berriman, Susie and Mark Buell, Jonathan Gans and Abigail Turin, Wendy Schmidt, joined Cheryl Haines, the art dealer who together with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the National Park Service, and the Headlands Center for the Arts first dreamed up this daring collaboration with Chinese artist Ai Weiwei who is under house arrest. “This is the largest and most ambitious art project the National Parks has ever presented,” said Haines Gallery founder Cheryl Haines, who wore a golden spangled jacket with ‘Ai am not here’ emblazened on the back.
