Happy birthday to Paul Cézanne, born on this day in 1839! In “Still Life with Cherries and Peaches,” Cézanne created space by presenting objects from varying viewpoints (we seem to look down on the cherries but across the bowl at the peaches), and he made shadows not with gradations of black or grey but by juxtaposing planes of color, as in the red-orange peaches that have green-blue shadows.
