“Every season we redo the white shirt,” says Karin Gustafsson, head of womenswear design at Cos, the Swedish brand with a new stateside flagship in Beverly Hills. “But we always use new materials,” she adds. The three-story space, Cos’s first in America, includes plenty of crisp white button-downs among collections for women, men, and children, as well as an upstairs showroom where editors and stylists can find looks for future seasons. As Gustafsson glances around the new Beverly Hills boutique, she notes that the fall collection was inspired by the British countryside changing color as winter sets in. “The silhouettes are cocooning,” she says, noting that unlined wool has that effect. “Boiled wool gets this body to it, but it still floats, it doesn’t get rigid,” she adds. The women’s looks have a deconstructed look with seaming on the outside and hues including an emerald shade Gustafsson calls “utility green.” The men’s collection, designed by Martin Andersson, also includes a similar range of colors and the designs have a utilitarian yet polished look to them as well. Marie Honda, Cos’s managing director, says, “form follows function,” as she glances around the space. The architectural line hangs amid Hans Wegner chairs, and is lit by a large skylight that allows rays to shine in, spotlighting the stark white shirts.
