A thicket of white paper plants bloomed into a lush garden of colorful posies once model Baptiste Giabiconi arrived with a watering can at Chanel’s spring 2015 haute couture presentation in Paris on Tuesday, January 27. Beneath the dome of the Grand Palais, a futuristic version of the white paper flowers Karl Lagerfeld conjured for his spring 2009 couture show came to life just before models appeared dressed in Technicolor suits in lush hues of orange, blue and yellow. By the fifth exit, a pistachio green skirt and cropped jacket, it became clear that midriffs will continue to be on display this spring. But—in a move that seemed to riff simultaneously on California skate culture, off-duty actors, and the West Coast propensity to dress for colder weather than the climate actually produces—Lagerfeld created knit caps to pair with some of his most intricately embellished looks. It came as no surprise that guests who traveled to Paris from warmer climates such as Los Angeles, including actresses Kristen Stewart and Dylan Penn, were elated to see the abbreviated designs. “There was a navy crop top and navy skirt that buttoned up the back that I loved,” said Penn. Stewart was drawn to the same sort of tailoring. “I was extremely excited to see a tweed jacket cropped… with a lower-rise skirt,” she said.

The continental contingent was drawn to Lagerfeld’s palette and the vibrant mis en scène he created during the dead of winter. Actress Vanessa Paradis said she was spellbound by both the sets and the clothes. “There was so much color, so many flowers,” she said. “We saw them bloom at the start of the show, then we had that same feeling as the dresses arrived.” For her, the clothes seemed to transform into increasingly intricate looks in much the same way as the delicate petals emerged from buds on the paper plants. Actor Gaspard Ulliel, most recently seen onscreen playing the title role in Bertrand Bonello’s Saint Laurent, said the show reminded him of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist work. “It’s like Degas’ dancers have been transported into a painting by Rousseau,” he said. Such a scene would be a vision indeed.
