“Thank you for making my industry look sexy,” was one response Elle Editor in Chief Roberta “Robbie” Meyers got from a reader regarding the magazine’s July feature “Women in Tech: The Pioneers.” Myers greeted guests at an intimate dinner celebrating the article’s honorees at Jackson Square’s Quince on Wednesday, June 18th in San Francisco.
Elle’s “Women in Tech” included founders of One Kings Lane Susan Feldman and Alison Pincus, Jawbone VP of Marketing Danika Laszuk and Deputy Chief Technology Officer for the White House, Jennifer Pahlka. Additional power-listers honored in the issue included Genevieve Bell (“I have fake eyelashes on so I’m ready for anything,” the VP of User Experience Research at Intel joked at her Elle photo shoot) Caterina Fake, Sarah Friar, Jessica Livingston, Danae Ringelmann, Gwynne Shotwell, Kara Swisher, Padmasree Warrior and Grace Woo. Guests could learn more about the evening’s accomplished execs with each woman’s headshot and Elle interview featured on iPad minis that dotted the banquet-style tables.
These 13 women are helping to kick off a major tipping point in tech. Elle reports 60% of new jobs in the tech industry went to women in 2013. “We’re very dedicated to talking with women who are making the culture,” Myers said when asked why the magazine chose to focus on the traditionally male industry. “That is women in tech.”
