Scene and Heard: Red Hot Chili Peppers
“Some of you may think I stole Oates’ mustache. It’s a lease. He gets it back with whatever comes with it… gravy,” said Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, mid-set at Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, on Sunday, August 11. The cheeky quip from the L.A. band’s front man referred to John Oates of rock and soul duo Hall & Oates who played on the same stage earlier in the afternoon. Days earlier, Kiedis got a tour of the Oracle Team USA boat that will compete in September’s America’s Cup in the San Francisco Bay, but, by Sunday, he was back in rocker mode (though he did start the band’s set wearing a tailcoat). Just before the encore, Kiedis added, “I keep trying to become a more highbrow person but I always resort back to Beavis and Butthead.” Bassist Michael Balzary (Flea) added to the cartoonish aura of the performance with his pogo stick-like jumps around the stage, a feat made possible by the warm-up laps he jogged backstage before the band’s show.
