Scene and Heard: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
βIt feels so, so, so good to be back on the West Coast,β exclaimed Seattle-based hip-hop artist/rapper Macklemore during his performance with Ryan Lewis on Saturday, August 9 at Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival. Throughout the set, Macklemore expressed his appreciation for the Bay Area and his fans, while noting his favorite places including Oakland, the Tenderloin, and The Embarcadero.
This yearβs performance at the Twin Peaks stage marked Macklemore and Lewis’ second appearance. (They were first booked as daytime openers in 2012). After opening with a medley of βMake the Money and β10,000 Hoursβ and an energetic rendition of βThrift Shop,β (during which Macklemore donned his signature floor length fur coat), the singer brought Fences onstage to perform their hit collaboration, βArrows.β During the performance (scheduled at the same set time as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Macklemore and Lewis continued to surprise the audience, and introduced a same-sex couple on stage for a heartwarming proposal followed by a rendition of βSame Loveβ with Mary Lambert. βThe people in the Bay Area have been for decades at the forefront of the movement of Equality,β said Macklemore. βThere is a history here to push the envelope of humanity so all people are spoken for, all people are represented and all hearts have the freedom to love whoever they want to love.β
Following a final outfit change, Macklemore kicked-off a 3-song encore that concluded with a second performance of βCanβt Hold Us.”
