“You’re allowed to keep eating or doing whatever you want,” said Lou Doillon as she took the outdoor stage constructed at the Paramour Mansion in Los Angeles during the launch party for Martell Caractère Cognac on Thursday, October 10. As guests sipped cocktails made with the newest introduction from the French cognac house (including one drink inspired by a margarita that was created with agave nectar, fresh lime, and blood orange juice), Doillon sang breathy tracks from her first album, Places. The multi-hyphenate artist, who works as a musician, actress, and model, moved seamlessly between French and English while addressing the American audience and French hosts. Doillon’s trademark bangs (a look she and her sister Charlotte Gainsbourg inherited from their mother, Jane Birkin) shaded her face as she sang in English accompanied by guitarist François Poggio. Finishing out her set, Doillon introduced her cover of The Clash’s “Should I Stay Or Should I Go,” with a request for audience participation. “If you know it, sing along,” she said, adding, “It would make us extremely happy if you do.”
