“Designers must be feeling nostalgic,” said Lauren Gores Ireland, the Los Angeles-based founder of Lauren’s Lyst, after returning from New York where she got a first look at some of the fall collections shown during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. “They’re bringing retro-glam silhouettes back to the runways,” she added, noting that looks at Jenny Packham, Rachel Zoe, and J Mendel seemed inspired by ‘70s staples like the jumpsuit and peasant blouse that have been recreated in modern silhouettes. “Printed tunics, dresses with billowy sleeves, and hip-hugging bell bottoms are all returning in a major way,” Ireland said. She also pointed to “turtlenecks paired with sleeveless minis and maxi dresses painted in vibrant prints” as more evidence of the trend. Ireland said she found herself drawn to the vibrant metallic details of the mod dresses at the Delpozo show (designed by Josep Font) and the jackets shown by Veronica Swanson Beard and Veronica Miele Beard at the Veronica Beard presentation. But Ireland also recognized the repetition of current spring looks that will continue through the fall. “There will be more high-waisted bottoms, strategic cut-outs, and crop tops this autumn,” she added. In all, Ireland found the eye-catching nostalgia in the coming season to be tempered with a pleasantly modern twist.
