“It’s transportive, it takes you somewhere else without feeling remotely like a costume,” said Kristen Stewart at the Chanel Métiers d’Art show held in Dallas’ Fair Park on Tuesday, December 10. Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld selected the location for his pre-fall ’14 collection in homage to the city where Coco Chanel staged her postwar return to fashion. Stewart, who is the new face of Chanel for this collection, flew in from Los Angeles for the fashion extravaganza that included a drive-in screening of the movie, The Return, about Chanel’s return to fashion staring Geraldine Chaplin (as Mademoiselle Chanel) and Amanda Harlech (as an American fashion editor). “Everything was really elegantly beautiful and forward and kind of badass and yet cowboy-themed,” said Stewart, adding, “Which you wouldn’t think went together.”

The evening began in sprawling Fair Park in a drive-in theater filled with 74 vintage cars culled from various U.S. cities as four screens loomed overhead. Guests including André Leon Talley and Vogue’s Anna Wintour sat inside the pristine convertibles to watch the Lagerfeld-directed short film. Afterward, Chanel devotees entered a large barn structure where flags from America, France, Texas, and the house of Chanel hung from the wooden rafters, and a fashion show filled with fringe, feathers, frills, and plenty of denim entranced the audience of 900. There were plenty of cowboy boots, leather, turquoise, Mexican blanket motifs, and Lagerfeld even finished the show with two white feather headdresses, evoking every imaginable Southwestern archetype. He dedicated the Texas-Paris collection to his friend, Houston socialite Lynn Wyatt, who applauded Lagerfeld’s work before heading to the post-show saloon party where Poppy Delevingne—clad in a black cowboy hat—took a turn atop the mechanical bull. Everyone, Lagerfeld included, seemed to stick to the adage: Go big or go home.
