Scene and Heard: Keren Craig of Marchesa
“I went shopping mad at vintage stores in Haight-Ashbury and can’t wait to go back there!” said Marchesa designer Keren Craig of her first visit to the Bay Area years ago. Craig, the British co-founder of the womenswear line known for richly embellished gowns, remembered that shopping trip as she stepped inside Neiman Marcus in San Francisco’s Union Square on Thursday, May 7, to show her fall 2015 collection at a champagne reception. Craig arrived in town just after the 2015 Met Gala, where she and design partner Georgina Chapman dressed Sofia Vergara, Ellie Goulding and Poppy Delevingne for the party. “Each of these women has her own distinct personal style,” said Craig. “The Costume Institute is a wonderful cause, and [we] were truly excited to attend the gala.” Craig said her own gown for the New York ball was a fuchsia silk faille skirt paired with a floral top that had a 3-D feather applique from the spring ’15 collection. But all eyes in San Francisco were on her fall looks; the Opera Ball and San Francisco Symphony opening night are both slated for September.
Galas aside, vintage clothes remain top-of-mind for Craig. She said she looked to the ’20s for inspiration for Marchesa’s latest collection. “We wanted to convey a sense of mystery and vintage glamour,” said Craig. “The collection has a ’20’s influence, harkening back to the adventurous spirit and carefree attitude of the time.”
