Perfect Pairing: Valentino + New York
Members of the fashion flock including Sofia Coppola were on hand in New York for Valentino‘s presentation of a 47-piece haute couture collection created to celebrate the opening of the Italian fashion house’s Fifth Avenue flagship on Wednesday, December 10. The monochromatic looks designed by Maria Grazia Churi and Pierpaolo Piccioli were shown inside the former Whitney Museum of American Art, and Valentino Garavani himself as well as the house’s former chief executive Giancarlo Giammetti were on hand to see the immaculate white dresses, gowns, coats, suits, and capes float down the runway. In anticipation of the collection, the designers created mood boards filled with images of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (herself a longtime New York resident) who was dressed by Valentino for her 1968 wedding to Aristotle Onassis. The looks had a bit of a 1960s Courrèges, Space Age feel, but each piece—whether it be a sheer dress or small-shouldered cape—looked entirely clean and modern. The collection was an impeccably suitable segue to 2015.
