What kind of person are you? The new T-shirt collaboration between Mother and Kind Campaign begs that question. The cotton designs, emblazoned with the words “play nice,” benefit the Los Angeles-based nonprofit started by two filmmakers who met at Pepperdine University. “We made a documentary seven years ago,” says Lauren Paul, referring to Finding Kind, the 2009 film about bullying and how it affects the lives and relationships of women and girls. Since then, Paul and Kind Campaign co-founder Molly Thompson have traveled cross-country on 10 tours visiting schools to screen the film and talk with students. Paul, who is married to actor Aaron Paul, says the nonprofit is constantly adding schools to the growing list of places where the two founders give a two-hour presentation on the topic. “We’ve all been on both sides of this,” Thompson says, noting that during Kind Campaign stops, students often collectively realize they have been both the victim of bullying and also its perpetrator at some point in their lives. Discussing the topic allows girls to see the damage done by gossip, hate, and teasing. “People feel encouraged to share,” says Thompson. “They’re ready for things to be different.” Playing nice is a start.
