A poster for Maleficent (Disney).

With her piercing eyes, chiseled cheekbones, blood red lips, and sharply pointed nails, Angelina Jolie has all the trappings of a perfect Disney villain in Maleficent, the latest retelling of a fairytale as a live action film that opens on Friday, May 30. Indeed, the actress wears boldly jutting prosthetic cheekbones and vibrant green color contacts in the new take on the Sleeping Beauty story, and her character inspired a MAC Cosmetics collaboration that includes a shade of red lipstick called True Love’s Kiss that is already sold-out online. Though Jolie paired a nude shade of lipstick with her black Atelier Versace gown for the film’s Los Angeles premiere held at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on Wednesday, May 28, her pout is decidedly red throughout the film (even the young Maleficent played by Isobelle Molloy has ruby lips in the movie).

The tale begins with actress Janet McTeer’s voiceover, “Let us tell an old story anew and see how well you know it,” and panoramic views of the moors in the fairy world populated by toads, talking trees, and some Avatar-esque nymphs. A young Maleficent soars above the clouds with fairy wings without a care in the world until she meets a human boy and begins to get glimpses of darker forces at play in her world. The scene is set for the fairy to be wronged by her lover, an act that will transform Maleficent into a horned shrew who carries a staff, dresses in black leather ensembles that evoke Thierry Mugler, and enlists a black crow as her spy and constant companion. And thus, a Disney villan complete with Jolie’s intense red lips, sinister smile, and chilling cackle is born.
