The art collectors and fashion tribes who congregate in Florida each December for Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami transform the storied beachside city into a modern moveable feast. California delegates as diverse as Alex Israel and street artist Thierry Guetta (Mr. Brainwash) gather to view new work and populate the fair’s famed late night party scene. The ephemeral nature of the event is part of its allure, and, since 2012, Louis Vuitton has taken inspiration from its changeability by commissioning a trove of furniture and industrial designers to create foldable furniture and travel accessories in homage to the house’s travel trunks of yesteryear. New to the collection this year is a lounge chair envisioned by Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, a foldable turquoise leather shape that can serve as a chaise, an armchair, or a pouffe. Wanders’ imaginative piece joins 16 other objets nomades created by some of the brightest minds in design (Patricia Urquiola, Maarten Baas, the Campana Brothers, Atelier Oï, and many others), all of which are on display for the next two months at the French fashion house’s Miami Design District boutique. Pull up a folding chair and stay a while.
