Perfect Pairing: Levi’s + Outside Lands
Whether you’re riding a fixie or relying on a town bike for transportation around San Francisco this weekend, you’ll want to add two stops to your itinerary.
After powering up with a Four Barrel blend, ride to Market Street for a copy of Levi’s 501 Interpretations, a limited edition coffee table book filled with images of creatives wearing 501 jeans (this is the 140th anniversary of the pants, invented in 1873). One of the book’s contributors is photographer Francesco Carrozzini (son of Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani) who trained his lens on actor Alan Cumming, designer Rachel Roy and Paper’s Mickey Boardman, all dressed in the ubiquitous dungarees. Carrozzini—himself a fan of 501s who heard about the project through his friend, tie designer Alexander Olch—shot black and white images, saying, “sometimes the pictures just make more sense that way.” Though Carrozzini won’t divulge what sort of camera he used, he says that the personality of his subjects guided the framework of each session. “Alan [Cumming] is such a chameleon,” says Carrozzini. “He gave so much range and is so dynamic.” And, after a glance at the shot, it’s possible that nothing comes between Cumming and his Levi’s.
The Levi’s Bike Shop at Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, held once again in chilly Golden Gate Park, is stop number two. Mechanics are on hand from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm to adjust brake pads, fix flats or install bike bells, and custom tailors will add reflective straps or repair Commuter Series designs from the venerable denim company (hours on Saturday and Sunday are 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm). And if riffs by Band of Horses, Rhye, Pretty Lights, Paul McCartney and The National inspire a need for speed, enter daily competitions at the Levi’s Commuter Bike Sprints tent.
We’d say it’s all downhill from there, but that depends on where you live.
