Interior designer and noted taxidermy collector Ken Fulk assumed his best Vladimir Putin pout for a photo taken hours before the All Fools Day party he held at his San Francisco gallery Peep Show on Tuesday, April 1. Fulk issued a proclamation stating that he had donated a fossilized saber-toothed tiger to geneticists at the University of California Santa Cruz, and a stuffed version of one called Tatiana took center stage at his party. In addition to celebrating the large cat, Fulk also launched his new candle at the packed fête held on a rainy evening in SoMa. “April Fools Day was very big when I was growing up in Virginia,” said Fulk, as the smoky scent of his latest home accessory filled the room. “My father was a great prankster, and his tricks usually involved ‘exotic’ animals he found on our property such as ‘zebras’ (our horses which he striped for the day).” In keeping with his frisky father, Ken displayed the exotic beast to the delight of assembled guests. On any day other than April 1, the animal was probably a white lion. But on this day, it became a taxidermist’s playful homage to Ken’s sense of humor. The Night of Illusion also included tête-à-têtes with fortune-teller Vladimir Brown, torch songs performed by chanteuse Veronica Klaus, and Motown and dance hits spun by DJ Juanita Moore.
