Perfect Pairing: Gucci + Luchino Visconti
Hundreds of stars walked the Cannes Croisette at this year’s film festival, but one set drew particular attention: the team involved in the restoration work on Luchino Visconti’s 1960 film, Rocco e i suoi fratelli (Rocco And His Brothers). Italian fashion house Gucci started its partnership with Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation over 10 years ago, restoring John Cassavetes’ A Woman Under The Influence (1974), which had its premiere in San Francisco, in 2006. Since then, a new motion picture has joined the growing list of restored films each year, culminating in Visconti’s work about the fortunes of Rocco (Alain Delon) and his brothers during their move to Northern Italy as the country industrializes. Benicio Del Toro introduced the film that had been cleaned and sharpened, frame by frame, to an audience that included original cast members Claudia Cardinale and Max Cartier. Scorsese called the film’s images, “pearly, elegant, and lustrous.” Here, a look at the guests and two of the restored frames. Years of age have been removed, but there are no telltale signs of surgery. That’s good work.
