Gwyneth Paltrow was the honoree, along with Alexandra and Sean Parker, at the fifth annual Kaleidoscope Ball by UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital at 3Labs in Culver City Saturday night. Dressed in a sleek, all white ensemble, Paltrow joined guests including Jaime King and Ron Howard, who marveled at the night’s show of curated works of illumination in honor of the evening’s light theme, from artists such as James Turrell, as well as the Harry Winston diamonds that adorned models who posed with guests during cocktail hour.

Recognized for her advocacy of healthy living, Gwyneth Paltrow accepted the Kaleidoscope Award, thanking sponsors Mattel, Harry Winston, and board members Stephanie Booth Shafran, Natasha Croxall, Beth Friedman and Hillary Milken before adding, “I am here tonight because I’m here for UCLA and the doctors who work so tirelessly to provide a quality of life and healing to our children.” The mother of two continued: “Looking at my table, I am with all of the mothers that I’ve met since moving to Los Angeles; the mothers who have brought so much depth and clarity and beauty and strength to me. Of course, I’m here to lend my support to the children who are so helped by this incredible organization, but I’m here for the mothers. The strength that it takes to persevere through an illness of a child is truly unbelievable.

Alexandra Parker, who along with her husband, Sean, received the Philanthropic Leadership Award, noted, “We’re living in an amazing moment in history. Science that’s happening now has the potential to save lives, and it’s incredibly inspiring to play a small part in that.”

The biggest round of applause came after 13-year-old Kaiis Davis Jarrahy was honored with the Extraordinary Children’s Award. During his speech, he joked of his actress mother, Geena Davis, saying, “I’m starting off my big award collection younger than my mom did.”

A live auction helped raise more than half a million dollars, with purchases of a private dinner for ten at Wolfgang Puck’s Test Kitchen, custom Barbie dolls for a power couple in their likeness, as well as a one-week stay at Amanpuri.

Closing out the night, Chris Martin took the stage for a mini concert. Urging fans to get closer—guests like Jane Ross, Randy Jackson and Marlien Rentmeester swarmed the aisles while others sat on the floor or filled the edge of stage, phones out—before the Coldplay frontman delved into “Yellow,” “I Used to Rule the World,” and a cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.”
