Two years ago, Jaclyn Shanfeld’s closet was overflowing with once-worn wedding outfits. Knowing she’d probably never wear many of the garments another time, the Los Angeles native and founder of Shop Hers, a high-end consignment company in Santa Monica, set out on a mission to find a consignment store for her designer goods. “It was the end of a long wedding season, and I had a closet full of designer clothing I had no desire to ever wear again,” says Shanfeld, in her Soho-like office layered with exposed brick walls and a well-edited selection of clothing, handbags, and shoes. “Countless trips to local consignment stores played out like horror films, and the total sum of my earnings didn’t amount to half of what I had paid for one item. Often, the checks that I received weren’t enough to buy groceries. Shop Hers was really conceived out of personal necessity.”

Before launching Shop Hers in late 2013, Shanfeld began to sell her wares on eBay and later enlisted the expertise of Jenna Stahl, Creative Director at Nordstrom.com, and Thanh Khuu, CTO of ShoeDazzle. “We started with a select group of family and friends,” explains Shanfeld. “Soon we had thousands of requests for invitations and we decided to open the gates. Who are we to say ‘no’ to women when it comes to Chanel?”

Now, Shop Hers—with coveted finds ranging from a Chanel tweed-trimmed raincoat to an orange ostrich Hérmes Birkin—operates according to a foolproof system: Style Soul Mates (matches women with similar styles and the same size and/or measurements); Sure Shop (includes a team of experts who verify each item); and Designer Brands Only (curated designer clothing, shoes, and accessories). “We love great fashion no matter what the label, but in order to create the kind of marketplace that thrills even the most seasoned fashionistas, we’ve got to keep the list tight,” says Shanfeld. Some of the items on her own wish list include a royal blue crocodile satchel by Nancy Gonzalez, and a rare Louis Vuitton black suede clutch by Sofia Coppola.“I get to wake up every morning and do what I love,” says Shanfeld. “It really doesn’t get much better than that. I had a dream and it came true. But, the very best part is the fact that my team and I are changing the way women approach fashion. We are helping women reshape their wardrobes and in turn, their lives.”
