California Beauty: Spoke & Weal Salon
Aveda Global Guest Artists Jon Reyman and Christine Thompson have set their sights on California tresses. The business partners opened their first West Coast salon in San Francisco’s Russian Hill, and are slated to launch a Southern California location later this spring. In San Francisco, Spoke & Weal‘s boutique salon set-up boasts a no-nonsense beauty aesthetic focused on great cuts, color, and style. “We wanted the salon to reflect the local vibe of the city,” says Thompson, Spoke & Weal’s colorist. “Its clean, minimalistic décor gives the sense when you walk in that there’s no fluff like other California salons. It’s just the equipment you need and the stylists who know how to use it. Visitors instantly know that it’s all about the work.” Indeed, industrial hair dryers dangle from the ceiling to accompany the salon’s arsenal of products derived from flower and plant essences.
As the team readies the new Los Angeles space, Thompson has noticed some differences in the ways that her clients approach their hairstyles. “People here in San Francisco are really open to suggestions of what we think as professionals,” she says. “In L.A., clients come in with photos of celebrities, wanting to look like the picture. Here, they still might bring in a photo, but it’s more about how we can translate the look to more personally fit them.” Bay Area and Southern California beauty followers can book cuts with Reyman and coloring sessions with Thompson as the two creatives split their time between the salon’s West Coast locations and the countless designers whose looks they create each season for New York Fashion Week. Meanwhile, Spoke & Weal is poised to become California’s top address to tame your mane.
