California Beauty: Rachel Comey Fall 2014
Makeup artist Hannah Murray extended the shelf life of the deep plum hue that’s been in circulation since last fall at Rachel Comey’s fall 2014 presentation held in Brooklyn on Thursday, February 6, during New York Fashion Week. Using new NARS colors and old favorites, she devised an edgy eye that had models looking as though they’d been burning the midnight oil over multiple nights. Comey’s line—a favorite among Hollywood moms who live in Brooklyn such as Michelle Williams and Maggie Gyllenhaal, as well as Los Angeles transplant Miranda July—always has a bit of boyish charm and a less-is-more aesthetic, and this show included fresh variations on that theme. The makeup lent an additional toughness to a selection of charming sweatpants, twill shirts with tattered edges, printed dresses and Comey’s trademark clog-heeled shoes. Murray likened the look to that of a “cool, quirky Dover Street Market girl,” and added, “The plum, lived-in eyes give a certain edge but with fresh skin and lips it has a carefree spirit.”
