California Beauty: Marc Jacobs Fall 2014
Fluffy clouds billowed on the horizon at the earthy Marc Jacobs fall 2014 presentation closing New York Fashion Week on Thursday, February 13. And the clothes Jacobs showed echoed the softness of the set designed by Stefan Beckman, Jacobs’ longtime show collaborator. Beckman also recently worked with Diane von Furstenberg on the setting for her eye-catching Journey of a Dress exhibition in Los Angeles. In New York, Jacobs showed scoop-neck dresses and ribbed leggings in light neutral hues. His ruffled gowns hinted at the restraint shown at the beginning of the show, but the refreshingly spare aesthetic got more complex as the dyed pastel hues became darker. François Nars, founder and creative director of his eponymous makeup line, devised a beautifully light and fresh look for the models’ faces. “The makeup look was really inspired by the collection, which is very matte,” he said. “There’s nothing too silky and I wanted that to translate to the makeup. The models look like mannequins. The eyelid is a pale neutral grey and we made it look bigger by foregoing mascara. The lips have a touch of frosted metallic silver. We used a lot of powder for a matte, porcelain finish.”
