“The skin is fresh and light juxtaposed with this Black Dahlia-inspired lip very reminiscent of Jean Harlow,” says makeup artist Val Garland who prepped models using NARS Cosmetics for Erdem Moralioglu’s presentation of his fall 2016 collection held in London. For Garland, the look evokes the “spirit of 1930s Hollywood Boulevard,” and indeed, there’s a very fresh-faced pin-up quality about it. Moralioglu endeavored to recreate a casting call of sorts, conjuring up a backlot filled with hopeful starlets during the old studio system in Hollywood for his show. A scene from All About Eve played over the soundtrack as the show began, an extra touch that seemed a fitting announcement for the parade of young aspirants in lace and velvet patchwork dresses and embroidered suits who emerged on the runway.
