California Beauty: Chanel Fall 2014 Couture
On July 8, at the Grand Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Karl Lagerfeld’s fall 2014 haute couture show for Chanel was a sartorial lesson in the baroque and the beautiful. Trading in over-the-top set designs that have become Lagerfeld’s signature style, the designer’s latest collection delighted guests in a more intimate setting recalling a minimalist-style 1930 Parisian apartment designed by modern architect, Le Corbusier.
The collection, fit to models like elegantly molded concrete (one of Le Corbusier’s preferred materials), features a selection of coatdresses, bike shorts, sleeveless dresses, and gowns, versus the traditional cutting and sewing of haute couture. All designs were paired with embellished flip flops tied with silk ribbon.
Hairstylist Sam McKnight created the “80s boy band-inspired” spikes, while makeup included pearlescent skin, charcoal-shaded brows, and winged eyeliner, a wink to Le Corbusier-designed arches.
