California Beauty: Chanel Fall 2016
Chanel quilting has turned up on just about every possible surface over the years, from bags to boots, but makeup artist Tom Pecheux managed to simulate the intricate look in an arresting new way for Karl Lagerfeld’s presentation of his fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection. Models’ eyelids were dusted with shadow in little diamond-shaped quilt quadrants mimicking the effect of fabric run through with a basic stitch that traditionally binds layers of cloth together to produce a telltale pillow effect. The minutely-detailed eye makeup was perfectly suited to the show for which Lagerfeld gave every guest a front row seat with a tightly-framed view of each model. From a distance, the effect resembles a smoky eye, but, up close, it’ll spark a double take. Here, a guide to the entire look.
