California Beauty: Alexander Wang fall 2015
Alexander Wang proved that he’s earned his black belt with his fall 2015 women’s ready-to-wear show held in New York on Saturday, February 14. The designer, raised in San Francisco, sent out an all-black collection tarted up with bits of leather, silk, velvet, and plenty of metal studs. Each girl wore a pair of thick-soled combat boots to drive the edgy point home. Wang even enticed some models, including Ashleigh Good, to dye their locks black. NARS makeup artist Diane Kendal, who created the pale neo-goth faces for the show said, “The inspiration is heavy metal rock. Think Kiss. The look has a very gothic rock-and-roll feel.” Yet rather than conjure up an army of dark-lipped dominatrices, Kendal painted beautifully natural faces with shadowy eyes and a hint of mystery. The makeup-prone band that formed in 1973 could take a lesson from her modern handiwork. It’s never too late to lighten up.
