California Beauty: 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2016
“In looking at Phillip’s collection, the Japanese influence really stood out to me,” said makeup artist Francelle Daly who used NARS Cosmetics to contour cheeks and fill in brows at Phillip Lim‘s runway presentation of his Fall 2016 collection for 3.1 Phillip Lim, held in New York on Monday, February 15. “There’s a lot of traditional kimono inspiration and details used within the collection,” she added. Lim, who honed his eye working for Katayone Adeli and at his Los Angeles-based label Development, showed a collection rife with his version of power suits made in Prince of Wales check, but the pieces had a sporty construction with drawstrings on pants and zippered shirts or blazers to match. He drew inspiration from what he called “lady bosses” in Tokyo. Daly picked up on the theme. “I wanted to bring those elements into the makeup and concentrate on black kohl liner,” she said. “The eyeliner is very strategic, it’s really about a moon-shaped look. For me it’s almost a hint of architecture within the eye.” The effect was natural enough for its wearer to be taken seriously, yet still add a bit of drama to the eye. Like the collection, Daly’s looks neatly bridged the line between polished and sporty; never an easy feat.
