About Town: Sandy Hill

Editors' Notes

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Yosemite

"It's the place where I first fell in love with mountains and where I learned to climb."

Editors' Notes

THE GIANT DIPPER ROLLER COASTER, Santa Cruz

"Because I grew up nearby and, as a child, went for a ride on this thrilling old fashioned wooden coaster practically every Sunday. It still gives me an adrenaline rush, even to this day."

Editors' Notes

LA PURISIMA MISSION, Lompoc

"My favorite of all the California Missions (and I have seen them all)."

Editors' Notes

THE SANTA MONICA FARMER'S MARKET, Santa Monica

"I think it's the greatest place to buy food in the entire world. I am there at 8:00 AM every Wednesday when the professionals are doing their shopping."

Editors' Notes

SAN ONOFRE BEACH (OLD MAN'S SURF BREAK), Orange County

"On a sunny day I'll stay until evening, and cook dinner on a bonfire."

Editors' Notes

ABBOT KINNEY BOULEVARD, Venice

"Great shopping for everything I ever need and many things I never knew I needed. It's home to my favorite L.A. restaurants, superb people watching and trend spotting—and I can get there on my bike."

The multi-faceted Sandy Hill leads an unexpected double life as an adventurer, mountaineer and former magazine editor for titles like Vogue and Allure. She was the fourth American woman to climb the Kangshung Face peak of Mt. Everest and one of the first people in the world to have reached all seven summits. Sandy has penned two books, Fandango (Artisan Press), a lifestyle cookbook and Mountain (Rizzoli), a collection of high altitude images. Currently, the Venice Beach resident is training for a mountaineering ascent and ski descent of a remote 25,000-foot Himalayan peak next month. This is her California:

PARADISO CROSSFIT This is the place I consider to be my mission control. The workouts and regimen I follow from here make everything else that I do possible.

MANRESA RESTAURANT This is the best restaurant in the state.
