About Town: Carol Ann Emquies
Carol Ann Emquies, co-owner of Salt Air eatery, spends a lot of time in Venice. The New York native and founder of Blinken Interiors (she also doubles as the restaurant’s interior designer), has also been busy creating spaces in Paris and New York.
When she’s not at the restaurant or working on private residences, she’s traveling on behalf of Africa Schoolhouse, a foundation dedicated to benefitting schools, deep wells, and medical clinics in rural villages in Northern Tanzania.
Here, Emquies tells C her favorite Los Angeles hangouts.

GUILD I buy R13 jeans and Acne Studios everything. I only wear Stateside t-shirts, and I stock up on them at Madison.
SALT AIR Oysters, Oysters, Oysters. If I’m not at Salt Air, I love going downtown to Bestia. The specialty pizzas are always delicious, and the creamy polenta is insane.
GARDE You can’t go wrong with beautiful tabletop or cashmere blankets from Garde on Beverly Blvd. I also frequent Peter Dunham Textiles for pillows, and Lucca Antiques on La Cienega when I’m designing homes [for Blinken Interiors].
SANTA MONICA FARMERS’ MARKET The Wednesday morning market is the best. Shaner Farms eggs and Tutti Frutti tomatoes are a staple in our kitchen at home.
KREATION KAFE I’m always filling the fridge with juices and elixirs from here.
YOGAWORKS I adore Krista Cahill’s class, and hiking in Los Leones.
CHATEAU MARMONT It’s a bit cliché, but I’m always happy there. It’s the best place in LA to drink La Piscine (champagne with a big cube of ice). It makes me think of Paris.
THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL it’s impressive, and it’s my favorite place to see a show. There’s so much great architecture downtown, from the Bradbury Building to the newly revamped Theater at The Ace Hotel. The Chris Burton light installation in front of LACMA is another LA classic.
