Valentino + Sofia Coppola Opera Premiere
Hollywood darling Sofia Coppola —of films Marie Antoinette, Lost in Translation and countless other acclaimed credits—has taken her creative eye across the pond to the grand stage of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, a 19th century opera house in the heart of the ancient city. In her debut role as lyrical opera director, Coppola works alongside visionaries and creators Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti, as well as Valentino Creative Directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli to bring audiences La Traviata, a rendition of the 1853 classic with, naturally, jaw-dropping, high fashion costume design. The newly envisioned piece draws on the talents of multiple collaborators from across the artistic spectrum, with Briton Nathan Crowley of Batman Begins and Dark Night helming production design and Valentino, a staple fixture on the iconic Rodeo Drive, providing specially designed costumes. The opera premiered on Tuesday, May 24 and attracted a star-studded crowd, including actress Keira Knightley, actor Luke Evans, front-row mainstay Olivia Palermo and her husband, model Johannes Huebl. La Traviata will run through Thursday, June 30.
