Entertainer Wayne Newton hosted the 2014 UCLA Head and Neck Surgery Luminary Awards, a benefit for the David Geffen School of Medicine, held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Wednesday, January 22. As guests including Teri Hatcher and Karina Smirnoff arrived to a cocktail reception where the UCLA Gospel Choir performed classics including Kool & The Gang’s “Celebrate,” The Jackson 5’s “ABC” and Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.” As honorees John Mayer, Dianne and James Bashor, and Ann and Jerry Moss accepted their awards, each applauded Dr. Gerry Berke of the UCLA Voice Center for Medicine and the Arts for his work with them to correct their vocal problems. Prior to treatment, Mayer was diagnosed with a granuloma in his vocal chords, and sought out Dr. Berke for treatment. After accepting his award, Mayer performed “Daughters,” and a new release from his latest album, Paradise Valley, “Dear Marie.” Celine Dion, another Berke patient, received a standing ovation for her performance of “My Heart Will Go On.”
