James Turrell LACMA Opening
Longtime fans and friends alike gathered for the opening of James Turrell: A Retrospective, an exhibition LACMA director Michael Govan called a homecoming for the Pasadena-born artist. As they walked through cavernous galleries, guests experienced a survey of lighting works created by Turrell from the mid-’60s through the present including many pieces that were built onsite at the museum. And they experienced firsthand the meditative qualities of the art by sitting in various rooms viewing the play of light in darkness, just as Govan promised. “These works are best seen by one person at a time,” he said. “They’re immersive, they get inside you and your body.”
