The Children’s Defense Fund California hosted the 24th annual Beat The Odds Awards at the Book Bindery in Culver City on Thursday, December 4. The event, honoring five high school student recipients Chase Moore, Elizabeth Lopez, Sequoia Canada, Timothy Walker, and Zachary Byrge, (honorees received a $10,000 college scholarship and other student support services such as private tutoring and SAT preparation courses) was attended by Children’s Defense Fund President Marian Wright Edleman and co-chairs Katie McGrath and J.J. Abrams, Carol and Frank Biondi, Laphonza Butler, Ruth-Ann Huvane, Kevin Huvane, Katie Sharer and Mark Mullen, and Liza and Conan O’Brien. Other notable guests included John Boyega, Jordana Brewster, Tim Guinee, Attorney General Kamala Harris, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Kevin Nealon, Brad & Kimberly Williams Paisley and Elisabeth Shue.
