The 48th annual Oscar de la Renta fashion show and luncheon was presented by Saks Fifth Avenue at Lake Tahoe on Saturday, Aug. 5, to a sold-out crowd of 650, raising a record $1.1 million to benefit the League to Save Lake Tahoe.

Beneath impeccable blue skies, and with the shimmering sapphire lake beyond, Oscar de la Renta’s luxe Resort 2018 collection was presented on a grand runway to guests including Dede Wilsey, Barbara Brown, Edith Tobin, Jessica Hickingbotham, Samantha Bechtel and Stephanie Marver.

“I look forward to this event with Saks Fifth Avenue all year,” said Alex Bolen, Oscar de la Renta’s CEO, who flew out from the East Coast with his wife, Eliza Bolen, also an executive with the company. “We fully support the League’s mission to keep Tahoe blue, and we love the fantastic group of passionate people involved, who are very much like a family.”

Saturday, Alex took time for an early morning hike followed by a swim and a round of waterskiing with his sons, Henry and Thomas—an annual ritual. “The lake is so beautiful, we had to give it a try,” he said.

This year’s fundraiser continues the runway and trunk show tradition, which launched in 1969 on a makeshift plywood catwalk beside the lake by Oscar de la Renta’s pal Bill Blass and Saks Fifth Avenue. After Blass died, de la Renta was invited to show his collections. Oscar de la Renta passed away in 2014 after two decades of involvement. This year, the company’s new creative directors, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, received a round of applause.

The event was dedicated to the original architect of the fashion show—and a huge advocate for Lake Tahoe—arts philanthropist Adolphus Andrews Jr., who passed away this past January.

Show highlights included novelty outerwear and trench coats, as well as exquisite embroidered and embellished evening separates. Popular with guests were sequin cocktail dresses in strong pops of color. A playful jungle motif was woven throughout the collection.

And the post-show tradition of guests dashing to the glamorous trunk show to try on and order embroidered and embellished gowns lived on.  Long after 4pm, Boaz Mazor, Oscar de la Renta’s longtime ambassador, was still surrounded by a flurry of tulle and beads.

Meanwhile, the Bolens headed to the Reno airport for their flight home with fundraising for the ultra-blue alpine lake accomplished.
