Moschino S/S 19 + Resort Collection Show
Move over, P.T. Barnum. Jeremy Scott may have staged the greatest show on earth on behalf of Moschino.
As the fashion brand’s creative director, Scott led a fun and sparkly circus to Los Angeles on Friday, June 8, highlighting his designs for the women’s resort 2019 and men’s spring-summer 2019 seasons.
Among the guests catching the exuberant show at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank (which featured a juggling stilt-walker as well as Violet Chachki’s aerial performance under the red and blue-striped tent) were Gwen Stefani, Paris Jackson, Aubrey Plaza, Liberty Ross, China Chow, Jaime King and Tallulah Willis. Moschino also proved that fashion is a family affair, welcoming many kids, including the daughters of celebrity stylists Tara Swennen and Jeanne Yang, with cotton candy and popcorn.
Thanks to his longstanding relationship with stylist Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, who whipped up the maximalist magic for the show, hair maestro Oribe had the chance to work with Scott for the first time. Having found inspiration in the circus as well as Josephine Baker, Oribe created leopard-print wigs, baby bangs, bobs with flips and beachy waves. “A lot of glam, a lot of fun, a lot of hats,” Oribe said during a moment of calm in the pre-show frenzy.
Indeed, the hats spanned the gamut from tiny cone-shaped toppers festooned with rhinestones to showgirl-worthy headpieces jutting feathers toward the roof. The clothes weren’t for shrinking violets either.
In his introduction to the models’ advent on the runway, Scott, dressed in a top hat and black ensemble elaborately embroidered to resemble a gold skeleton, teased the audience: “We have thrills and chills and plenty of frills to delight you. You will witness death-defying acts of glamour. You will see beading and embroidery never before attempted in a setting like this.”
In a flashback to Baker from the 1920s, he offered slinky dresses swishing in yards of ruched tulle and silk georgette. Some models appeared as high-fashion clowns in giant ties and baggy shorts. Even the more traditional silhouettes such as sharply tailored suits glimmered in a diamond-patterned Lurex brocade that a glam rock-loving harlequin would have killed for.
In Emma Roberts’ eyes, Scott certainly proved that he beat Barnum at his own game. “That was one of the most incredible shows I’ve ever seen,” gushed the Scream Queens actress as she and other front-row guests vacated their seats minutes after the models’ final walk. “It really told a story and it was unique and I wanted to wear every single piece.”
