Music Director Gustavo Dudamel wielded a baton rather than a light saber to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic on Tuesday, September 30, during its opening night gala held at Walt Disney Concert Hall benefiting the organization’s music education programs. But neither weapon could have kept a bevy of storm troopers from taking the stage during the concert tribute to composer John Williams. The evening included performances by violinist Itzhak Perlman and a program filled with such memorable tunes as “Olympic Fanfare & Theme,” the score for Schindler’s List, as well as pieces from Star Wars that were accompanied by a work created by video artist Netia Jones. Guests including Julie Andrews, Michael and Jane Eisner, Frank Gehry, Herbie and Gigi Hancock, Ben Harper, Anjelica Huston, Anne Jeffreys, Don Johnson, Stana Katic, Sherry Lansing, William Friedkin, and William Shatner all joined Williams for the evening.
