Helmut Newton at Annenberg Space for Photography
Cindy Crawford joined guests including Mandy Moore, Rashida Jones, Minka Kelly and China Chow at the opening party for the Annenberg Space for Photography’s exhibition, Helmut Newton: White Women, Sleepless Nights, Big Nudes on Thursday, June 27, held at the Century City museum. In the age of Instagram, dominated by digital photographers who snap hundreds of shots without batting an eye, it’s startling to hear Helmut Newton’s former assistants talk about the equipment the famed lensman used for his shoots: one camera, one light meter, one flash and one or two rolls of film. For Newton, fashion photography was more about the women than the clothes. “My technical equipment is very basic because it gives me more time to work with the girl,” says Newton, on set with Crawford in Monaco in Helmut by June, shot and directed by his wife of 56 years. In her movie, also on view at the Annenberg exhibition, June recounts a conversation she overheard, “A fashion editor said, ‘Helmut, you’ve only taken six pictures.’ And he said, ‘You only need one.’”
