Sculptor Robert Grober and playwright Tony Kushner along with co-chairs Rita Wilson and Bottega Veneta Creative Director Tomas Maier welcomed nearly 600 guests to the Hammer Museum’s 11th annual Gala in the Garden on Saturday, October 5. The event, which took place at the Los Angeles non-profit’s outdoor courtyard, brought together philanthropists and artists including Jodie Foster, China Chow, Laura Mulleavy, Kiki Smith, Scott Sternberg, and C Magazine’s October cover girl, Diane Kruger. Actor Will Ferrell posed as Tom Hanks to accompany Wilson to the event, and, after his impersonation of the actor kicked off the dinner, museum director Ann Philbin announced—to great applause—that the Hammer plans to eliminate its admission fee in 2014. Dandelion Ranch fashioned arrangements of deep purple dahlias on ebony wood tables, Chef Suzanne Goin of Lucques cooked, and strands of twinkling amber lights hanging above the courtyard lit the festivities. Artist Charles Ray praised Gober’s work and actress Viola Davis paid tribute to Kushner during the evening’s festivities. The gala raised $2 million for the museum’s exhibitions and free programs, and singer-songwriter k.d. lang took to the stage to coax guests onto their dancing feet before they headed out into the warm L.A. night.
