The Broadcast Film Critics Association hosted the 19th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on Thursday, January 16. Guests including Bradley Cooper, Tom Hanks, Jonah Hill, Kristen Bell, Julia Roberts, and Emma Thompson celebrated this year’s nominations and winners at the event that also honored Louis XIII Genius Award recipients Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke, and Richard Linklater—who collaborated on a trilogy of movies: Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight. The evening’s award winners included Amy Adams (best actress in a comedy), Matthew McConaughey (best actor), Jared Leto (best supporting actor), Leonardo DiCaprio (best actor in a comedy), Lupita Nyong’o (best supporting actress), Sandra Bullock (best actress in an action movie) and Mark Wahlberg (best actor in an action movie), who addressed veterans and current troops both at home and overseas in his acceptance speech for the film that also won best action movie, Lone Survivor. Director Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity stole the spotlight with seven awards, including best director and best actress in an action movie, followed by American Hustle with four awards and 12 Years a Slave with three awards. Los Angeles native Forest Whitaker was presented with the Joel Siegel Award by Oprah Winfrey for his various charity works. Before Julia Roberts presented the award for best picture to American Hustle, she remarked, “This whole night has been like some strange Fellini movie that I forgot was in my Netflix queue.”
